Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE
Video Editing Assessment — CJOC
A three-hour video editing challenge for Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC), transforming supplied Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE footage into a one-minute Instagram Reel. My final video and editing workflow led to my selection from a group of six candidates for an IS-03 video editor position.
25 minutes of footage. Three hours to deliver.
The assessment evaluated my ability to work efficiently with supplied footage and produce a short-form video within a strict deadline. I received five clips of approximately five minutes each, along with three music options, and had three hours to create a one-minute Instagram Reel featuring Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE.
The challenge was to review the available material, make editorial decisions, select an appropriate soundtrack, and assemble a cohesive video suited to a social media audience.
My role: Video Editor — IS-03 candidate. My focus was video editing and short-form content using the supplied material.
Making every second count.
-
Footage Review & Selection
I reviewed the five supplied clips to identify material suitable for a concise, engaging social media edit. With approximately 25 minutes of footage and only one minute in the final reel, selection meant deciding which material would best serve the short format.
-
Editorial Direction & Music
I chose one of the three supplied music tracks and built a visual sequence around the intended energy and pacing. The soundtrack and footage needed to work together as a cohesive piece within the one-minute deliverable.
-
Editing & Delivery
I developed the final video in Premiere Pro and completed the required reel within the three-hour assessment window. The deadline required me to balance time spent reviewing material and making creative decisions with completing the finished edit.
The finished 60-second reel.
One Instagram Reel, edited from supplied Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE footage.

Selected from six candidates.
Following the assessment, I was selected from a group of six candidates for the IS-03 video editor position at Canadian Joint Operations Command. Both my final video and editing workflow contributed to that outcome.
This experience demonstrated my ability to work within tight deadlines, make creative decisions with limited source material, and deliver a finished multimedia product in a professional assessment environment.
I ultimately chose a different employment opportunity. This work was completed as a competitive hiring assessment; I did not hold this position at CJOC.
