Shared Services Canada (AAACT)

During my first co-op in Summer 2024, I worked at Shared Services Canada within the Accessibility, Accommodation and Adaptive Computer Technology (AAACT) team, as part of the Digital Accessibility and Inclusivity Design team. My work focused on accessible communication through banner design and a series of video tutorials, while also deepening my understanding of the importance of accessibility in design and in government.

Overview

Supporting accessibility through clear communication, inclusive design, and multimedia content.

At Shared Services Canada, I completed my first co-op within the Accessibility, Accommodation and Adaptive Computer Technology (AAACT) team, working with the Digital Accessibility and Inclusivity Design team. This experience introduced me to accessibility-focused communication in a government setting, where clarity, readability, and inclusion were essential parts of the design process.

My role included creating banner graphics and producing a series of accessible video tutorials that helped communicate information in a more usable and inclusive way. Through this work, I developed a stronger understanding of how design can support accessibility not only visually, but also through structure, hierarchy, pacing, and clear communication.

Process

Designing banners and accessible tutorials while learning how accessibility shapes communication in government.

One part of my work involved designing banners that promoted accessibility-related content in a clear and visually organized way. This required careful attention to contrast, legibility, layout, and messaging so that the final visuals were both engaging and accessible. The banner work reinforced how small design decisions can significantly affect readability and comprehension.

I also created a series of accessible video tutorials, focusing on structure, pacing, and clarity so that information could be understood by a broad range of users. This co-op helped me understand the importance of accessibility in digital design and in government communication, and it had a lasting impact on how I think about inclusive design in my work today.
